YOUR GUIDE TO BUYING A USED CAR IN AUSTRALIA

What every Australian buyer should know before paying a deposit on a second-hand vehicle.

How to find a VIN on an Australian car

The Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code unique to every car. In Australia you'll usually find it stamped on the bottom-left of the windscreen, on the driver-side door jamb, on the firewall in the engine bay and on the chassis itself. It's also printed on the registration papers and on most state RTA records. Always cross-check the VIN on the car against the VIN on the official paperwork — any mismatch is a major red flag for a cloned or re-VIN'd vehicle.

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is the federal database of finance and security interests registered against vehicles. If you buy a car that still has money owing, the lender can legally repossess it from you — even though you paid the seller in full. Every VinDocs Australia report includes a PPSR check, so you know before you transfer the money whether the seller actually owns the car free and clear.

NEVDIS — the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System — is the federated database that tracks written-off vehicles, stolen-vehicle records and registration data across all Australian states. Statutory write-offs can never be re-registered for road use; repairable write-offs can, but their value drops sharply and many slip back onto classifieds without disclosure. Always check NEVDIS before you commit.

Compare VinDocs vs Revcheck

Rolling back an odometer is one of the cheapest forms of used-car fraud and one of the most damaging — it inflates the asking price and hides wear that will soon cost you in repairs. The VinDocs report shows mileage readings logged at services, inspections, auctions and ownership transfers across the vehicle's life. A clear, rising mileage curve is what you want to see; any dip or sudden flat-line is reason to walk away.

Before you commit, do these five things in order: 1) Match the VIN on the car to the rego papers and state RTA records. 2) Run a VinDocs Australia report — and read the PPSR section carefully. 3) Get a pre-purchase inspection (NRMA, RACV, RACQ or a trusted mechanic). 4) Confirm the rego is current and a valid roadworthy / pink slip / blue slip is in place for your state. 5) Make sure the seller can hand over the transfer-of-ownership form, both keys, the service book and the current rego papers.

Yes. Every VinDocs Australia report includes a PPSR finance check, so you can see whether the vehicle still has money owing against it before you pay. This is the single most important check for any private used-car purchase in Australia.

We check the VIN against NEVDIS — the federal database of stolen and written-off vehicles — as well as state RTA records and global theft databases. If the VIN appears as stolen or as a write-off, the report will flag it before you commit.

Yes. You can search by VIN or by Australian licence plate (rego) on this page. The plate search is useful when the VIN isn't easy to read or you want to do a quick check before viewing the car in person.

No. The report is a comprehensive reference to help you make an informed purchase, but it should not be used as a legal title document. For legal transfer you still need to lodge the change of ownership through your state RTA.

The preview is instant. Once you pay, the full report is generated and delivered to your email within a minute, and you can also access it from your VinDocs account at any time.
