Changan Automobile is one of China’s largest car makers. Based in Chongqing, with roots going back to 1862, it builds cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles under the Changan, Deepal and Avatr brands, and has run joint ventures with Ford, Mazda, Suzuki and PSA. How to read a Changan VIN

A Changan VIN has 17 characters and follows the international ISO 3779 format, which China applies through its GB 16735 standard:

Characters 1–3 (WMI): the World Manufacturer Identifier. It tells you the manufacturer and the type of vehicle (see the list below).
Characters 4–8 (VDS): the vehicle descriptor section: model line, body type, engine and restraint system, as coded by Changan.
Character 9: a check digit, calculated from the other characters. A wrong check digit is a strong sign of a mistyped or altered VIN.
Character 10: the model year code (for example N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025).
Character 11: the assembly plant.
Characters 12–17: the production serial number.
